Ellis originates from the biblical name Elijah (Elias). This name was given during baptism and later was adopted by several families. It appears the usage started in France during the time of Charlemagne and migrated into England and Ireland under Anglo-Saxon rule. As a result, the name Ellis is associated with ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. The name can be seen in a number of variations such as, Elis, Elys, Alis, and Ellys
William Alis is the first recorded name to appear. It is found in the Doomsday Book out out Yorkshire, England.
One distinctive line of Ellis heritage appears to have descended from Vikings, that eventually settled in England. This line can be traced on the Male side following the I haplogroup This marker produces unique characteristics that contains unique markings that trace early migration patterns through Europe.
